You Don't Need to Code
You don't need to understand Python to help your child succeed in HKDSE ICT. What you need: understanding of how to support, when to intervene, and when to step back.
What is HKDSE ICT?
HKDSE ICT (Information and Communication Technology) has two papers:
- Paper 1 โ 105 minutes, covers theory + Python programming
- Paper 2 โ specialism (usually Databases or Networks in HK)
Python accounts for roughly 40% of Paper 1 marks.
Why Python?
Python is the most used programming language in Hong Kong's tech industry. Mastery opens doors to university CS programmes, data science roles, and fintech careers. It's an excellent investment in your child's future.
What "Good Practice" Looks Like
- Daily short sessions (30-60 min) beat weekend marathons
- Typing code (not just reading) โ this is the key indicator
- Working through past papers in the final 3 months
- Breaking problems down on paper before coding
Warning Signs
- Only watching YouTube, not coding
- Copy-pasting solutions without understanding
- Avoiding Python entirely in favour of other subjects
- Frustration without attempts to debug
- No progress after 2 months
How to Have Helpful Conversations
Don't Say:
- "Why is this so hard? I thought Python was easy."
- "Just ask a classmate."
- "You should know this by now."
Do Say:
- "What specifically is giving you trouble?"
- "Can you explain what your code is trying to do?"
- "Let's break this into smaller steps."
Tools You Should Know About
- PyForm (pyform.dev) โ free browser-based Python IDE designed for HK students
- HKEAA past papers โ official sample questions
- YouTube channels โ supplementary, not primary
When to Get a Tutor
Consider a tutor if:
- Child consistently fails mock exams despite effort
- Teacher cannot provide enough individual attention
- Child enjoys Python but needs advanced challenge
Don't get a tutor just because it's "what everyone does". Self-study is free and often equally effective with good resources.
Budget
- HKEAA past papers: HKD 200-400
- PyForm: free
- Optional paid tutor: HKD 300-800/hour
- Reference books: HKD 200-500
Minimum viable budget: HKD 200. Everything else is bonus.
Post-HKDSE Conversation
If your child shows aptitude for Python, discuss:
- CS / Data Science at HK universities
- Summer internships in tech
- Personal projects that could become careers
